  1. This machine is cheap and plays all cd & dvd formats and the best of all it plays divx certified discs for a relatively cheap price. It also has progressive scan!!!
    $70 @ walmart.
Pro : Plays everything including divx
    Con : none

  2. Nowadays DVD players can be purchased new for as low as $25, but the quality and performance are weak. I paid only $69 for my Philips DVD player and it was worth every penny. Unlike basic DVD players (that typically only play movies) this one plays everything. I've burned DVD's and CD's from my IMac and it plays them all. I also hooked up my speakers to it and it plays cd's just as good as any top quality stereo.

    This machine is it!
    Pro : Features
    Con : Could be smaller

  3. I can't say anything about durablity because my machine is new. But I think someone should mention the very rudimentary controls. The machine has no slow motion. You can't eject the dvd using the remote. It has no time counter to tell you how far you are into the dvd. And when you turn off the machine part way through a dvd, it starts the dvd from the beginning when you turn the machine back on. But the picture and sound are better than my old machine, and this one plays more formats. In short, the price is outstanding, but you make a few trade-offs to get it.
Pro : good unit for the price
    Con : no slow motion

  4. Great Buy for the price. Plays everything it says it plays, but there are a few other video file formats that I would like it to play so I can see it on a bigger screen "TV". You could always patch your PC to tv though, so for a dvd player that can play music too…. GREAT BUY. :)
In fact it can play more than most expensive ones.
    Pro : Plays "almost everything"
Con : wish it could play more

  5. This DVD player is by far the best I have ever come across. I have tried mine with every disk/format imaginable and it will play just about anything. The only drawback that this DVD player has is that the MP3 playback menu does not allow you to browse the titles while you are listening to a song. This is a major drawback for the MP3 feature because this means that to brows the titles on a MP3 DVD you have to use the "skip to next track" button. This means that the player has to render the next song before you can know what it is. The menu only displays 7 titles at a time. It would be nice to see a menu that you could brows MP3 titles a page at a time. Sort alphabetiaclly. choose continuous, repeat song or disk and also program to play a list of selected songs from the disk. It has none of these features.

If you plan on buying this DVD player to watch content from the internet than you will find no better buy. However if you are buying it with the intention of shrinking your music collections onto DVD's than forget it. There are much better players out there for this.
    Pro : DivX DVD Player
Con : Plays MP3, However the menu for MP3 is poor.

  6. It's a time to upgrade your old DVD player then this is it. Good for under $70. I'm 100% happy with this DVD player made by Philips. It can play all of your DVD format if you done encoded and burn it correctly using DVIX/MPEG4/.AVI-high qality enc./SVCD/VCD/MP3 and JPG Picture. Many peoples are negative talks about sound quality and video not syn. with voice,on so many dvd player out there it is really problem with burning and enconding process. So this may have same issues as buring error other then that for this DVP642-You have it, it will paly all DVD format CD-R, CD-RW, SVCD, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD+R. composite video output is really good(Progressive scanning) but you need to tell DVD player by setting menu.
I hear it can play PAL/NTSC and region free. Todo that just look for on the web. Videohelp. search DVP642.
Pro : Too good to be true. it can program to be region free
    Con : Not buring DVD.

  7. Its like a dream come true DVD player. I have loads of avi, divx, xvid, mpeg, mp3, jpg files stored in my computer that I was lazy to encode them all onto a DVD format.

Finally DVP642 ended my search. Now I have burned every bit of these media files from my computer to data DVD and I can now play all these videos without connecting bunch of wires to TV from my laptop.

    Pros:
    - I have so far tried DVD-R, +R, +RW, -RW, CD-R, +R and it played it all flawlessly.
    - Surprisingly .srt and .sub (SUBTITLE) files can be added to your avi/divx files to play subtitles.
    - One of my DVD had a burning error in the middle of something. I thought I wasted my DVD. But surprisingly it played the error-DVD too!
    - It is slick, hardly 1.5" height
    - It has S-video port which is of great relief

Bought it from Circuit city for just $30 (after $30 MIR)

Cons: (Not exactly but I am just being honest)
    - Remote is not optimized. i wish they had better ergonomic design
    - can't skip anything faster than 8x
    - no volume control in dvd remote

I don't think the con's count. But If you are planing to buy a DVD player.. 642 is the one I would recommend rather than buying unbranded good-for-nothing players.
Pro : Divx support, slim and slick, plays almost all the DVD formats
Con : Can not skip faster than 8x and no volume control on dvd remote ! But do they count ?

  8. I clicked on Yahoo shopping and it recommended this player as the top player as rated by you all!

I bought it and it hasn't let me down. Thanks for the great advice. I was able to wade through the marketing junk of all the adds and just find what I wanted.

This player even played a DVD made by a friend that a "$500 player/recorder/doall machine" could not play.

    Buy it!
Pro : Just Works, no fuss
    Con : remote is non-intuitive
